When you join ASMP and you will be joining a network of thousands of colleagues, all professional photographers, throughout the United States and in more than 30 countries.

ASMP membership categories

General Members

  • Photographer must be actively and professionally engaged in publication photography with three or more consecutive years of substantial publication experience from date of first published work. This publication record must generate the major source (over 50%) of earned income. General members are the only voting members of the Society and receive all publications and benefits of the Society at no additional charge. General members are the only members listed in Find a Photographer on A review of publication experience is required and applicants must be sponsored by two General members of ASMP.
  • -One time Find a Photographer fee $50.00 / Dues $300.00

Associate Members

  • This category includes all photographers not qualified for General membership. The category does not require moving up to general in three years, and the dues will be constant. Associate members have most of the benefits of general members, but they will not be listed on Find a Photographer, and they do not have a vote.
  • -Dues: $200.00


  • Sub category of associate. This is a one-year only category serving as a transition for photographers who are starting out or are assistants. After one year, the dues will automatically be billed at the full associate member level. Benefits are the same as a full associate.
  • -Dues: $125.00

Affiliate Members

Affiliates are non-voting members, and receive the same benefits as an Associate member.

  • Individual
    • This affiliation is for individuals, self employed or employed by organizations, who service, supply, sell or educate photographers.
    • -Dues: $200.00
  • Student
    • Students at the college or post secondary level. Written proof of enrollment from a department head or admissions office, or class schedule on official school letterhead must accompany application. An individual can remain a student member for one year after completion of degree program. Student members receive a copy of the ASMP Professional Business Practices in Photography Book at the time application is approved.
    • -Dues: $55.00.

ASMP members can get in touch with the national office and receive advice on virtually any business or legal situation affecting publication photographers.

  • ASMP Bulletin
    The Society's magazine, published quarterly, presents news and features, free to all members and affiliates.
  • ASMP News lines
    Late-breaking news and the latest information on special pages in the Bulletin. They contain news, alerts, marketing information, legal and business information.
  • The ASMP Business Practices Book
    A guide for professional media photographers - The publication is packed with the kind of information that the professional publication photographer needs to run a business. This guide for professionals is available only to ASMP members - as a service.
  • ASMP on the World Wide Web
    A database of members, searchable by region and specialty, membership information, news, publications, features, a members-only forum and link to other important sites are on the ASMP Web site. Buyers and clients can locate ASMP members through the Find a Photographer feature on this site.
  • White Papers
    Special publications dealing with specific concerns of photographers.
  • Special Interest Groups
    In order to address needs and concerns unique to certain fields, ASMP has created special interest groups in areas such as architecture, underwater, and fine art.
  • Chapter Affiliation
    The ASMP chapter network now covers 40 cities, states or regions plus an array of foreign cities. These local chapters provide a wide range of seminars, workshops and local news, as well as the opportunity to exchange views and information with your colleagues. Networking is a major benefit of ASMP membership.
  • Education
    ASMP is committed to furthering education for photographers of all levels through its publications and programs.
  • Insurance
    Life, comprehensive medical, major medical, and disability insurance are all available. ASMP offers an accidental death and dismemberment plan. The Society pioneered the development of Prosurance, a liability and camera insurance policy designed for professional photographers. Coverage may also be obtained for workers compensation, weather, animal mortality, cast/models and umbrella liability. A program is also available to members only to insure funds for losses incurred through incorrect processing by labs.
